Home working allowance

Choose how to claim the cost of working from home. The app uses whichever you select as an allowable expense.

Simplified flat rate

Calculated allowance

Actual-cost apportionment: business % = (work rooms ÷ total rooms) × (work hours ÷ hours in week). Applied to each apportionable bill. Mortgage capital repayments and the full council tax are generally not claimable — enter only the interest element and check borderline items with an accountant.

Personal pension contributions

Personal pension contributions get basic-rate (20%) relief added to your pot automatically. If your profits reach the 40% or 45% band you claim the extra relief through Self Assessment — this app works that out for you. Pension contributions reduce your Income Tax but not your National Insurance.

Net → gross is grossed up by ÷0.8 (adds 20%). Annual allowance is generally £60,000 (2026/27), and you can't get relief on contributions above your relevant earnings — this tool doesn't cap for that, so keep within your limits.

Payments on account

Estimate only, based on the trading profit and pension you've entered for this year, using England/Wales/NI rates. It assumes no other income (employment, dividends, savings), no student loan, and that you're not VAT-registered. It does not file anything with HMRC. Confirm your actual return with HMRC or an accountant.
